Traditionally, the authorship of the Mahābhārata is attributed to Vyāsa. Among the principal works and stories that are a part of the Mahābhārata are the Bhagavadgītā, the story of Damayantī, an abbreviated version of the Rāmāyana, and the Rishyashringa, often considered as works in their own right. The text extols its own greatness: "yad ihasti tad anyatra yan nehasti na tad kvacit" It is also called the fifth Veda and its pre-eminence, along with the Rāmāyana ’s, in South-Asian Studies is universally acknowledged. For anyone who would like to read the entire Mahabharata, cover to cover but does not know Sanskrit, this is the best choice.
